They became a support group, more than a club. Rather than just being an impressive membership to list on a students resume, the BioMedical Club took on tasks that fell roughly into three categories encouraging science literacy and health awareness on campus; reaching out to children and adults in the surrounding region; and exploring ways to attain graduate school, and to succeed there, for current and future BSC science majors. On the Bluefield State campus, the club held an organ donor drive, paired with a chili cookoff to attract attention. Club members gave speeches in their classes, put together an informational booth, registered donors, and raised $500 to be given to an organ donor charity. For the last two autumns, the students arranged for a powder puff football game between students from BSC and neighboring Bluefield College at Mitchell Stadium, to raise breast cancer awareness. Club members gave out informative pamphlets on early detection of the disease. They also sold concessions, fed the players and gave each carnations. Dr. James Walters, a BSC faculty member and a club advisor, said, A lot of our events involve not just the community, and a lot of fun, but we try to have some educational elements, and we bring science to the community in a helpful way, with every one of these events. He added, Flag football is a whole lot of fun. Doud said, Having the game is one thing, but getting people to come and realize what the game is about, what its really for, thats a whole nother thing. Being able, while youre there, to promote breast cancer awareness, is a huge deal. The breast cancer awareness pamphlets were also handed out at informational booths during BSCs intercollegiate volleyball and basketball games that were designated pink games to draw attention to the fight against cancer. On Pink Day at the college, the club put together an informational table that included self-exam guides, an informative video and plastic breast models. To increase traffic, the table doubled as the site for a bake sale and two raffles. Each month, the club put together a display in a heavily-used campus building to focus the attention of passers-by on a certain disease or medical issue.
