Ken Olive, executive associate dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs. We assigned advisors from day one, but the students werent going to see them. We started looking at what motivates medical students, and in the first two years, it is grades. With that in mind, Olive and Dr. Tom Kwasigroch, associate dean for Student Affairs at the medical school, proposed a curriculum change that made career exploration mandatory for all Quillen students via a three-year course called the Career Explorations Program. The course involves self-assessments that help individuals determine what type of doctors they might be best suited to become. It also includes a variety of requirements to better prepare students to make these significant career decisions. In that first year, physicians from different specialties come do panel discussions, the students learn how to prepare a curriculum vitae, they commit to looking at specialties and they meet one-on-one with a faculty advisor for exploration of interests and abilities, Olive said. In the second and third years, there are more panels, they update their CVs and they meet with the advisor again. Finally, they select a clinical advisor to help them as they approach their final year of medical school. The Class of 2012 was the first class to complete the revamped career advising at Quillen, and students in each class thereafter have taken part.

When you want a job, make certain you go to the interview dressed nicely, whatever the position. People tend to see a person that dresses nicely as a more qualified candidate. Even if all you are doing is dropping off an application or a resume, dress well without going overboard.

When you are job hunting, contact the people whom you already know. Ask your friends and relations if they know of work that would suit you. If so, ask for an introduction to the employer. Some folks forgo this step, but you shouldn’t be one of them. Recommendations are not taken lightly by employers.

Maintain a proper mindset. Work at finding work, and don’t accept failure. Don’t let unemployment benefits make you complacent, because they won’t last forever. Try to create realistic goals about the number of applications you fill out.

Avoid limiting yourself with one job title, since these titles can change wildly from place to place. Research on the Internet different job titles that may exist and be similar to what you want. That way, you will be able to apply for more positions.

When writing a resume, position some sort of social media on it. Social media plays an important part in business marketing and networking, so demonstrate you have those skills.

Obtain a professional email address. Understand that this email address is one of the first impressions that an employer has of you. Generally, you should use your last name. It would be such a waste if you didn’t get a job simply because of an old, immature email address.

Make sure your resume references have up to date contact information. When your reference has a different phone number or forgets who you are, you’ll be in trouble. Check with references to make sure you have the right location and phone number.

Companies care about money. Spend some time honing your message on how the talents you bring to the position will enhance their bottom line. Although being honest and responsible are important qualities, companies need more.

Consider networking in your job specialty. If you want to be successful at networking, build relationships among your peers that are meaningful. Get involved with the industry you choose by attending different seminars, conferences and webinars, as well as any industry networking events. This is the way to become an authority in your field.

Try to get a steady schedule where you work. Many employers want to have a consistent worker. They will put their trust in you then. You need to be honest about specific work and lunch hours. Whenever your personal needs change, just let your employer know what could be done to help alleviate your scheduling issues.

Unanticipated or difficult questions from interviewers are vexing indeed. Although this does not happen all of the time, it is always better to prepare yourself for the possibility. Before the interview, identify your inactive periods, potential weaknesses, and any disciplinary issues in your past. Be honest, and take responsibility. Often, this is more beneficial than exaggerating or trying to lie your way out.
